"'Don't
you realize that I could ask my Father for thousands of angels to protect us,
and he would send them instantly?'"

Jesus
spoke these words right after his arrest. They provide a clue as to how he
possessed the amazing self-control to stand before Pilate and endure the
unimaginable pain of the suffering that followed. He knew the power at his
disposal. Self-control comes when we have faith that we are ultimately safe in
God's hands. When we lose control, we act out of a sense of poverty: "God won't
help me, so I'd better act—and fast!" When we remind ourselves of the vast
resources we possess in Christ to do whatever he asks of us, self-control is the
result.
